I’d never like to be a witch
Except on Halloween
To ride upon a bushy broom
Before a full moon’s gleam

A wart upon my crooked nose
I’d hold a big, black cat
And on my long and shaggy hair
There’d be a pointed hat

I’d drink no potions, no, just eat
Those gooey trick-or-treats
I’d get by stopping house to house
Astride my broom’s rough seat

And when the night is over
And morning streaks the sky
I’d leave my haunted mansion

~ Waarom???

Grote online klopjacht op dierenbeul!
Nadat er op verschillende sites een video verscheen
van een man die een hond van een brug gooit,
is online een grote klopjacht gestart.
      
Het incident zou in Litouwen hebben plaatsgevonden.
Te zien is hoe de man met de hond onder zijn arm
over een brug loopt en het dier naar beneden gooit.
Een andere man kijkt toe. Het geheel wordt gefilmd
door een derde persoon, die buiten beeld blijft.
De hond was niet op slag dood, maar ligt nog
enige tijd jankend op de grond.

Het hondje is helaas aan zijn verwondingen overleden!
Diegene die hiervoor verantwoordelijk zijn,
hebben zich aan gegeven bij de politie!
Ze ontvingen blijkbaar heel veel haatmail en dreigbrieven!
Het is nog onduidelijk welke straf hun te wachten staat!

~The Powhatan

The Powhatan (also spelled Powatan and Powhaten),
or Powhatan Renape is the name of a Virginia Indian tribe.
It is also the name of a powerful confederacy of tribes
which they dominated. The confederacy is estimated to
have been about 14,000-21,000 people in eastern Virginia,
when the English settled Jamestown in 1607.
They were also known as Virginia Algonquians, as they
spoke an eastern-Algonquian language known as Powhatan.

In the late 16th and early 17th centuries,
a mamanatowick (paramount chief) named Wahunsunacock
created a powerful chiefdom by affiliating 30 tributary
peoples, whose territory was much of eastern Virginia,
called Tsenacommacah ("densely-inhabited Land")
He was known by his title, Powhatan. Each of the tribes
within the chiefdom had their own weroance (chief),
but all paid tribute to Powhatan.

After Powhatan's death in 1618, hostilities with colonists
escalated under the chiefdom of his brother,
Opechancanough, who sought in vain to drive off
the encroaching English. His large-scale attacks in 1622
and 1644 met strong reprisals by the English, resulting
in the near elimination of the tribe.
By 1646 the Powhatan Confederacy was largely destroyed,
in part due to infectious diseases to which they had no
immunity. By this time, the colonies were desperate for labor.

Almost half of the incoming whites arrived as
indentured servants. As colonial expansion continued,
the Europeans imported growing numbers of enslaved
Africans for labor. By 1700 the colonies had about 6,000
black slaves, one-twelfth of the population.
It was common for black slaves to escape and join
surrounding Powhatan; white servants were also noted
to have joined the Indians. Africans and whites worked
and lived together; some natives also intermarried with
them. After Bacon's Rebellion in 1676, the colony
enslaved Indians for control.
In 1691 the House of Burgesses abolished Indian
slavery; however, many Powhatan were held under
servitude well into the 18th century.

In the 21st century, seven Indian tribes are recognized
by the state as having ties with the original
Powhatan confederacy. The Pamunkey and Mattaponi are
the only two peoples who have retained reservation lands
from the 1600s. The competing cultures of the Powhatan
and English settlers were united temporarily through
the marriage of Pocahontas and John Rolfe.
Their son Thomas Rolfe was the ancestor of many
Virginians; thus, many of the First Families of Virginia
have both English and Virginia Indian ancestry.

De Powhatan, die aan de oostkust van de Noord-Amerika
woonden ten tijde van de eerste kolonisten waren
in feite geen op zichzelf staand volk, maar een
confederatie die bestond uit een aantal kleinere
indianenvolken die samen een sterke unie vormden.
Ze maakten onderdeel uit van de Algonkin-taalfamilie.
Tot ongeveer 1400 hadden de volken in een los samenwerkingsverband geleefd, maar in de jaren
die volgden ijverden een aantal leiders voor een nauwere
vereniging tussen hun volkeren en vormden daarmee
een van de weinige Noord-Amerikaanse rijken die
wel wat weg hadden van de Mexicaanse beschavingen.
Geruime tijd bestond de federatie uit de Powhatans,
de Arrohatecks, de Appamattucks, de Pamunkeys,
de Mattaponis, en de Chiskiacks; in 1598 sloten
ook de Kecoughtans zich bij onder zware druk van
chief Powhatan bij de unie aan, die genoemd werd
naar de meeste dominante stam in het gebied.

Aanvankelijk toonden de indianen volop hun goede wil.
In 1608 bijvoorbeeld, bood Wahunsonacock, die aan
het hoofd stond van de Powhatan- indianen rond Jamestown (Virginia), John Smith zijn dochter Pocahontas ten
huwelijk aan. Het indiaanse opperhoofd gaf daarmee
te kennen dat hij een vreedzame relatie tussen de twee samenlevingen wenste. Wederzijds respect en
gelijkheid moesten daarin centraal staan.
Maar aan zijn boodschap werd amper gehoor gegeven.
De indianen voelden zich geen onderdanen van de Engelse
koning en weigerden de bevelen van gouverneur Smith
op te volgen. Voor zowel voedsel als maïs en wild waren
de kolonisten aangewezen op de indianen.
Om hun voedsel te bemachtigen aarzelden ze niet om
de dorpen van de indianen aan te vallen en te plunderen.

~ Slot Neuschwanstein

De kastelen van Doornroosje in Disney's the Magic Kingdom
en Tokyo Disneyland zijn gebaseerd op Slot Neuschwanstein,
ook in Legoland werd het kasteel nagebouwd.
  
Slot Neuschwanstein in Beieren is een kasteel
in Hohenschwangau bij Füssen in de Allgäu, gebouwd
in de tweede helft van de 19e eeuw in opdracht
van (de later krankzinnig verklaarde) koning Ludwig
of Lodewijk II van Beieren (25 aug.1845 - 13 juni 1886).
Het is het beroemdste bouwwerk van Lodewijk II
en met zo'n 1,3 miljoen bezoekers per jaar één van
de populairste toeristische attracties van Beieren.
Het kasteel is genoemd naar Schwan, een zwaan dus.
Zwanen waren de lievelingsdieren van de koning;
van zijn nicht Elisabeth kreeg hij een grote porseleinen
zwaan cadeau die in het kasteel staat.

 
Het kasteel is nooit helemaal volgens de originele
plannen afgebouwd, doordat Lodewijk II overleed voordat
het af was en de bouw toen onmiddellijk werd stilgelegd.
Het kasteel was niet bedoeld om gasten te ontvangen,
maar als privédomein van Lodewijk II (bijgenaamd de Sprookjeskoning), die steeds meer mensenschuw
werd en zich steeds meer uit het openbare leven terugtrok.
Het is ingericht met neogothische meubels en op de
muren zijn fresco's geschilderd van mythen en sagen,
geïnspireerd op de opera's van Richard Wagner.
Vooral Tannhäuser, de zwaanridder Lohengrin en zijn
vader, de graalkoning Parsifal staan hier centraal.
In dit kasteel werd de koning afgezet doordat de
Beierse regering hem onbekwaam liet verklaren.
Het prachtige paradebed is slechts een paar keer
gebruikt. In de troonzaal is nooit een troon gekomen.
Op het gewelf van de absis in de troonzaal staan
afbeeldingen van koningen en keizers die heilig zijn verklaard. Lodewijk hoopte hier zelf ooit tussen te kunnen staan.

 
Ironisch genoeg werd het kasteel, dat gebouwd werd
voor één enkele bewoner, zeven weken na de dood van
Lodewijk II geopend voor toeristen, en sindsdien is
het een Europese topattractie. Toeristen kunnen te
voet naar boven of (zoals de koning) zich per koets naar
boven laten vervoeren. Tussen de bergen is wat hoger,
rond 1850, de bekende Marienbrücke gebouwd door koning Maximiliaan II, de vader van Lodewijk II.
Vanaf dit bouwwerk heeft men een mooi zicht op het kasteel.

Neuschwanstein Castle is a 19th-century Bavarian
palace on a rugged hill near Hohenschwangau and
Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Germany.
The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria
as a retreat and as an homage to Richard Wagner,
the King's inspiring muse. Although public photography
of the interior is not permitted, it is the most
photographed building in Germany and is one of the
country's most popular tourist destinations.
Ludwig himself named it Neue Hohenschwangau;
the name Neuschwanstein was coined after his death.

The reclusive Ludwig did not allow visitors to his castles,
which he intended as personal refuges, but after his
death in 1886 the castle was opened to the public
(in part due to the need to pay off the debts Ludwig
incurred financing its construction).
Since that time over 50 million people have visited
the Neuschwanstein Castle. About 1.3 million people
visit annually, with up to 6,000 per day in the summer.
The palace has appeared in several movies, and was
the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty Castle (1955)
at both Disneyland Park and Hong Kong Disneyland.
 

In 1923 Crown Prince Rupprecht gave the palace
to the state of Bavaria, unlike nearby Hohenschwangau Castle
which was transferred to the private Wittelsbach Trust (Wittelsbacher Ausgleichfonds), which is administered
on behalf of the head of the house of Wittelsbach,
currently Franz, Duke of Bavaria.
The Free State of Bavaria has spent more
than €14.5 million on Neuschwanstein's maintenance,
renovation and visitor services since 1990.

The conception of the palace was outlined by
Ludwig II in a letter to Richard Wagner,
dated May 13, 1868;

“It is my intention to rebuild the old castle ruin
at Hohenschwangau near the Pollat Gorge in the
authentic style of the old German knights' castles...
the location is the most beautiful one could find, holy and unapproachable, a worthy temple for the divine friend who has brought salvation and true blessing to the world.”
