~Pygmy Hog~

Het allerkleinste in het wild voorkomende varken
is het Dwergzwijn, Sus salvanius.
Hij is afkomstig uit het Himalaya-gebied, Assam en
Zuidoost-Nepal. Het Dwergzwijn heeft een gewicht
van ca. 4 tot 8 kg; is donkerbruin van kleur en de
biggen zijn roodgestreept. Er worden momenteel
twee kleine populaties in reservaten te Assam gehouden
ten einde het uitsterven van dit ras te voorkomen.
Dit Dwergzwijn staat o.a. op de rode lijst van het
Wereld Natuur Fonds.

Het Dwergzwijn (Pygmy hog) is 55 tot 71 cm lang,
20 tot 30 cm hoog en weegt 6,6 tot 11,8 kg.
Zeugjes zijn doorgaans kleiner dan beertjes en
pasgeboren biggetjes wegen amper 150 tot 200 gram.
Het diertje heeft een onopvallend staartje
(2,5 cm / 1 inch lang bij volwassen dieren)
 

In the wild they live in tall and dense grassland.
Their diet consists of roots, tubers and sometimes
insects, invertebrates, eggs and young birds.
Pygmy hogs build nests by diggin a trough with their
snout and covering it with grasses. This helps them
to keep themselves warm in cold weather.
Size Head and body length 65cm. Shoulder height 25cm.
Weight Males 8.5kg. Females are somewhat smaller.
