my garden in May

A garden is a grand teacher.
It teaches patience and careful watchfulness;
it teaches industry and thrift;
above all it teaches entire trust.
by Gertrude Jekyll

I enjoy painting,
cutting the lawn and
working in the garden when I have time.
That's therapy for me. I enjoy working with my hands.
by Billy Williams

Every time I imagine a garden in an architectural setting,
it turns into a magical place. I think of gardens I have seen,
that I believe I have seen, that I long to see,
surrounded by simple walls, columns, arcades or the facades of buildings -
sheltered places of great intimacy where I want to stay for a long time.
by Peter Zumthor

I love things that are indescribable,
like the taste of an avocado
or the smell of a gardenia.

Magical.
The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps project has
been a neighborhood effort to create a beautiful
mosaic running up the risers of the 163 steps
located at 16th and Moraga in San Francisco.

~Attracting Faeries to Your Garden

birdhouses kolibrie hommelvleermuis
Create a garden that is conductive to all life.
Put up birdhouses, birdbaths and feeders,
bat houses and hummingbird feeders.

eekhoorn

Plant flowers and plants that are attractive to bees
and butterflies. Faeries are attracted to any place where
there are butterflies. Put nuts out for the squirrels.
Whatever you do to bring life to your garden
will bring Faeries as well.

Here is a short list of plants that attract beautiful
butterflies and faeries to your garden:

*Achillea millefolium (common yarrow)
*Aster novi-belgii (New York aster)
*Chrysanthemum maximum (Shasta daisy)
*Coreopsis grandiflora/certicillata (coreopsis)
*Lavendula denata (French lavender)
*Rosemarinus officinalis (rosemary)
*Thymus (thyme)
*Buddleia alternifolia (fountain butterfly bush)
*Buddleia davidii (orange-eye butterfly bush, summer lilac)
*Potenilla fruitiosa (shrubby cinquefoil)
*Petunia hybrida (common garden petunia)
*Verbena (verbenas, vervains)
*Scabiosa caucasica (pincushion flowers)
*Cosmos bipinnatus (cosmos)
*Zinnia elegans (common zinnia)

Install a small fountain or waterfall or put fish in a pond.
You might want to include a statue of faeries.
Anything that reflects light or is colourful and moving
particularly attracts the gnomes and elves.
Both faeries and water sprites like the splashy sound
and sight of a fountain.

Leave an area of your garden a bit wild and not too
cultivated. It need not be a large space, but having one
area that is dedicated to the faeries will make
them feel very welcome.

Ask faeries and elves to come to your garden.
“Where Intention goes, Energy flows.”
Whatever you place your conscious awareness on,
you will put into your life. As you put your attention
on faeries and gnomes and the elemental realm,
they will respond by being drawn into your garden.

~ Great Maytham Hall

Even eentje uit de oude doos!

Great Maytham Hall

Great Mayham Hall, vlakbij Rolvenden in Kent,
(England) De tuinen waren een grote inspiratiebron
voor het boek van Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924)
De Geheime tuin!

Great Maytham Hall
, near Rolvenden, Kent,
England, is a Grade II* listed country house.
The gardens are famous for providing the inspiration
for The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

  Great Maytham Hall
The original name of the Manor here was
Great Maytham. In 1721 James Monypenny built
a house here which he called Maytham Hall.
This was completed by his son Robert Monypenny
in 1760 but was largely burned down in 1893.
This house consisted of a main block of 2 storeys
and basement and 2 pavilions containing the laundry
and stables. These eighteenth century wings largely
survive, but the main building was rebuilt two storeys
higher by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1909-12 for the
Right Honourable H. J. Tennant, a prominent
Liberal Member of Parliament, who reverted to the
use of the original name, Great Maytham.

Great Maytham Hall

De orginele naam is Great Maytham.
In 1721 heeft James Monypenny dit huis gebouwd en
heeft het Maytham Hall genaamd.
Het huis werd afgebouwd door zijn zoon
Robert Monypenny in 1760
maar het brandde voor een groot deel af in 1893.

Great Maytham Hall Garden

The house and grounds fell into decline after
World War II. In 1965 Great Maytham Hall was purchased
and restored by the Mutual Households Association,
later the Country Houses Association,
a charity dedicated to saving and preserving historic
stately homes. The house was converted into fifteen
flats, with residents sharing the reception rooms,
entrance hall and drawing room; its first residents
then set about restoring the gardens and grounds.
In December 2003 the Country Houses Association
announced that it was closing down its residential
business and selling the eight Grade I and II listed
buildings it owned.

Secret GardenGreat Maytham Hall Garden

The walled garden of Great Maytham Hall provided
the inspiration for one of the most famous of all
books for children, The Secret Garden.
Its author, Frances Hodgson Burnett,
lived at Great Maytham Hall from 1898 to 1907,
where she found the old walled garden dating
from 1721 sadly overgrown and neglected.

Aided by a robin, Burnett discovered the door hidden
amongst the ivy, and began the restoration of the
garden, which she planted with hundreds of roses.
She set up a table and chair in the gazebo, and dressed
always in a white dress and large hat, she wrote
a number of books in the peace and tranquility
of her scented secret garden.

~
haar geurende geheime tuin.

Great Maytham Hall Garden

When Lutyens rebuilt Great Maytham Hall he
retained the old walled garden as an adjunct to
the grand new brick house in the manner of
Sir Christopher Wren, but landscaped the
terraced lawns and surrounding parkland in his
signature style, in partnership with Gertrude Jekyll,
who planted his design. The gardens and grounds
were well cared for by the Tennants until the
outbreak of the Second World War, when the house
was requisitioned by the army.
As part of the "Dig for Victory" campaign,
Frances Hodgson Burnett's beautiful roses were
replaced with cabbages and leeks, and the manicured
lawns were patriotically planted with potatoes and
carrots. A jettisoned German bomb in the middle of
the former lawn did not help to improve matters,
and after the war the house stood empty for
many years, and the gardens were left to decline.

~Vertical Gardening!

I am intrigued by the work created by Patrick Blanc
a french botanist and artist. We know all too well
the huge need for green spaces especially in urban
environments, he has a fantastic solution -
Vertical Gardens
www.verticalgardenpatrickblanc.com

Patrick Blanc overgrows the vertical surfaces of
buildings in the most beautiful way.
What he creates is far away from any fancy
horticultural show, his Vertical Garden could rather
be called eco-art, or greener architecture consisting
of a variety of plants trailing gently up any interior
or outside wall. Imagine the Hanging Gardens of ancient
Babylon but this time on modern concrete buildings.
But Patrick is not just simpy putting green on the walls
which last for a day or two: set up with a highly scientific
background he studies the many ways plants adapt
to extreme situations at the CNRS,
the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique
in Paris since 1982. Let’s have a closer look at
these organic wallpapers of botanist
Patrick Blanc today.

At 200 meters long and 12 metres tall,
this vertical garden is an impressive permanent
installation at the Musee du quai Branley in Paris.
The ‘living wall’ was designed and planted by
Patrick Blanc and forms the facade to the museum which was designed by enigmatic French architect Jean Nouvel.

Jardin Atlantique Paris

Jardin_Atlantique_Garden_of_Blue_and_Mauve_Paris
The Jardin Atlantique is a public park and garden
located in the 15th arrondissement of Paris,
on the roof that covers the tracks and platforms
of the Gare Montparnasse railway station.
It has an area of 3.4 hectares. It was created by
the landscape architects Brun, Penna and Schnitzler,
and opened in 1994.
 Jardin Atlantique Paris

A roof garden above a major railway terminus.
Since trains run from the Gare Monparnesse to the
Atlantic coast, a maritime theme was adopted for the
design. It has wave patterns, giant meterological
instruments, dune planting, board walks, a symbolic cliff,
boats and a sun-bathing deck.
The illusion works best on hot days.

jardin
Cinq-Martyrs-du-Lycée-Buffon nemen.
